the catcher in the rye
Marlies Plank (Austria)

Shooting situations

The Catcher in the Rye was inspired by JD Salinger's novel and was shot outdoors in one of the wildest areas in Vienna. With a lot of mosquitoes in the air chasing the models, the subjects may have run more intensely then I thought they ever would.

Further comments

I don't like over retouched images so I try to leave everything un-touched as much as possible.

This image represents energy very well. I like this shot because the girl is on the verge of disappearing – making me aware of the framing. This is a very simple image, but it embodies a happy feeling full of energy. (Vincent Munier)

This is a playful image and reminds me of a photo in a fashion magazine. I like how the grass is not completely green and the movement excites me. (Teruo Sekiguchi)

I like the movement and freedom that this work captures. This is a good work. (Hiroshi Osaka)

This work conveys a freshness and lightness, yet also capture a very human element. (Hiromi Tsuchida)

magical flight
Csaba Alfonz Ribenyi (Hungary)

Shooting situations

I took this photo near Kesznyéten in Borsod County, Hungary, on a wet meadow having evolved due to heavy rainfalls. The previous day, I set up my bird watching shelter next to a small lake, and I moved into it before dawn so that I could take photos of birds.

Further comments

Bird photography is one of my favorite themes. Very beautiful and atmospheric pictures can be taken with short exposure time, capturing the bird's motion in sharp detail. However, if I deliberately use long exposure time, the blur gives "life" to the image.

Joe Lekas (USA)

This shot was taken at night from the 30 Rockefeller Plaza Observation Deck in New York City (Midtown Manhattan). It was taken using a mini tripod and combines tones from 9 exposures.

Further comments

My goal is to capture as much of this world as possible using the technique I employ. Starting on major cities of the world acts as an urban gateway to my project. This iconic scene is at the heart of my Manhattan series and I am proud it was selected.

sand everywhere
Louis Pattis (USA)

Shooting situations

Death Valley National Park Mesquite sand dunes, California. I had to wait in the car for a thunder storm to pass over. On the hike in the predawn dark to the dunes I was drenched by a sudden downpour.

Further comments

I have been "making" images since the 70's, and I love the outdoors. For me photography is therapeutic and provides balance in my life. I regard the art of image-taking to be a sport, and I declare photography to be "my sport"!

Told You I Could Make You Laugh
Jeremy Fokkens (Canada)

Shooting situations

This was taken outside of Butare, Rwanda as I was walking toward a small village. I came across this boy who spoke little English, so I told him a joke and he thought it was hilarious.

Further comments

I want to capture energy, hardship, real life and motion with my photography to show the viewer a different culture, environment and feeling with a sole focus on people in developing countries.

My pupils at the Great Dune of Pilat, France

Further comments

In September 2008, as a History teacher at a junior high school, I organized a shore excursion for our 6 graders to the Great Dune of Pyla. It was a wonderful experience for the children, as some of them had never left the Lot-et-Garonne department before, and being able to see and touch the sea fills them with joy and excitement.

Pure Adrenaline
Peter Zinkhoefer (USA)

Shooting situations

This photo was shot from my 12th floor balcony in North Miami Beach in June 2010. The storm was located about 30 miles east of the Beach, slightly west of Bimini.

Further comments

When I first moved to Miami Beach I was amazed at the amount of lightning activity during the summer months. The constant electricity in the air inspired me to try to capture nature's raw power on camera. I bought a DSLR, a couple of lenses and tripod and sat on my balcony at night whenever I saw lightning in the distance. It took a few thousand shots to get this one. In the end, having the camera pointed in the right direction and presssing the shutter at just the right time takes quite a bit of luck and a lot of patience.
